Top 5 Christmas Carpet Cleaning Tips

Our top tips for keeping your carpet clean and fresh these holidays

1. Rugs & Mats – It all starts at the front doorChristmas door mat

Christmas carpet cleaning tip number one starts with the old adage “Prevention is better than cure”.  You want your guests to bring you goodies & gifts, not dirt & debris from the street!  The best way to ensure the guests come in but the dirt stays out is to place mats at all entrances to your home.  It may even be a good idea to lay some rugs and runners down in high traffic areas to ensure all the extra foot traffic does not damage your carpet.  Keeping your paths and porches well swept at this time of year helps too!  Aside from making your place look better, it will also mean dirt and leaves don’t blow in every time you open the door to welcome a new guest.

2. Vacuum – Suck it up!

Vacuuming is an extremely important part of CSanta cleaning carpet at Christmashristmas carpet cleaning.  Not only for the dirt you can see, but also the dirt you can’t see! Dust and grit trapped between the carpet fibres is quite abrasive and causes damage to the carpet. Foot traffic on carpet filled with grit, will cause permanent damage to carpet by scratching the fibres and making them dull looking.  This type of wear and tear cannot be reversed by carpet cleaning.  We highly recommend you step up your vacuuming routine over the busy holiday period.  Vacuuming both before and after guests will ensure carpet does not look prematurely old and worn (wish it was that simple for me!).

3. Spills & Stains – Don’t delay..

Attend to spills and stains immediately! Do not wait to clean them or you may just find you are left with a permanent reminder.  Whatever you do,  DO NOT use store bought carpet cleaning products – they often contain bleach which can permanently damage your carpet.  Don’t be a Scrooge when it comes to stain removal, or you might just find you are permanently reminded of  Christmases past! What you CAN do is contain the spill with paper towel or a cloth and remove excess solids.  You can clean many food and drink stains yourself, however, always consult a professional carpet cleaner for advice before attempting stain removal.  We are available all holidays for Christmas Carpet Cleaning help and advice over the phone.

4. Christmas trees – Real trees need careChristmas carpet cleaning trees in fed square

Nothing says Christmas more than the smell of pine.  Nothing says Christmas carpet cleaning disaster more than dead pine needles all over the carpet!   If you choose a real Christmas tree, keep your tree well watered to ensure it does not drop its needles.  However don’t water it so often that you flood your living room or that will be a whole other disaster! Make sure your Christmas tree is securely weighed down in the water so that it does not topple over and cause water damage – especially if you have pets or small children. I will never forget the Christmas our cat climbed the Christmas tree……

5. Upholstery – The sofa and the spare bed

Once you have your carpets looking their best, spare a thought for your harChristmas Upholstery cleaningd working couch and dining chairs.  They will be getting a lot of use over the holidays and will probably need a good clean either before or after the festive gatherings.  Then there is the spare bed – is it guest ready?  We can clean all of your mattresses to remove dust mites and other unwanted bedfellows!

Water Damage Carpet Stains

Need help with water damage carpet stains?water damage carpet stains removal

Have you ever left the bath running and forgotten all about it until you are up to your ankles in wet carpet? Never fear, Black Gold is here! We specialise in removing water marks and stains caused by water leakage.  Water damage carpet stains often leave a brown mark on the carpet after the water has dried.  This brown mark is caused by the colour from the carpet backing and dirt underneath the carpet, traveling up the carpet carpet fibre as the water evapourates.  This is process called wicking or browning.

Water damage carpet stains – Treatment

In the past I have discussed call outs where customers have had water damage carpet stains from overflowing washing machines. However in this instance, it was a bath left to fill and then forgotten. Our very lovely customer was overseas and her kids decided to have a bath in her ensuite.  They began filling the bath and then forgot all about it until water began dripping from the downstairs ceiling! They threw down a few towels and called Mum, who then called us in a panic!  She had used our service many times in the past for carpet cleaning so she knew we were the best carpet cleaning company for the job.

As she was overseas and could not survey the damage herself,  she was very worried that she might have to make a home insurance claim.  We told her not to worry, and went to inspect the water damage carpet stains.water damage carpet stains in Beaumaris

Water damage carpet stains need to be attended to quickly as mould can start to grow within 24 hours. We arranged to meet a neighbour at the property for access.  Then surveyed the damge, to determine if the customer needed to contact her insurance company.  Luckily, in this instance, we determined the damage to be minimal.  Most of the water had already evapourated, so we did not need to extract much water or use dryers on the carpet.  We were able to treat the carpet and stains with anti browning agents and an anti bacterial treatment.  These treatments stop mould and other nasties from taking up residence under the carpet.  Once the stains has been treated, we thoroughly steam cleaned the carpet and extracted the remaining residue.

Results speak for themselves!

These photos of water damage carpet stains before & after, show the end result after our cleaning and treatments.  Needless to say our customer was very happy with the results once she returned home and even happier that she did not need to put in an insurance claim.  Her kids were happy that we got them off the hook!  You will be happy too –we guarantee it!

Carpet water damage
SOS..carpet water damage..washing machine overflowing..Help!

So there I was feet up on the coffee table, soccer on the TV….ahhh I love Sunday mornings.  It is my one day off for the week and now that the weather is warming up, my weeks are getting busier and busier.  Not that I am complaining mind you, but I really do look forward to day off with the family.

Help..carpet water damage emergency! water on carpet

Then it happened….the phone rang… with some trepidation, I answered.  It was of course a job, but not just any job, a carpet water damage emergency!!

Emily from Prahran, Melbourne lives in a share house and unfortunately the washing machine sprung a leak and they were now up to their knees in water – well maybe their ankles, but there was quite a lot of water on the carpet.

Carpet Water DamageKeep calm and throw down the towel!

I told Emily not to panic and I would be there in about 30 minutes. She asked what she could do to while she was waiting, so I advised her to throw down some towels and soak up as much of the water on carpet as possible and avoid further carpet water damage, but not to stand on the towels.  “Whoops” she said, she already had stomped all over them attempting to soak up the water!  Do you do that too?  As soon as there is a spill throw down some paper or towels and stand on them? This is the worst thing to do as it forces all the liquid down deep into the pile and through to the underlay. “Never mind” I told her, “just try not to walk on the area until I get there, oh and open a window if you can.”  Ventilation is important to help speed up the drying process, so a fan positioned opposite an open window is ideal in this situation.

Sometime later……water damage carpet

Of course it was just my luck, that Emily’s Prahran apartment was on the second floor! So once I had lugged my trusty portable water extraction machine up 3 flights of stairs, I got to work, extracting the water from her carpet.

Luckily for Emily and her friends, the water hadn’t soaked through so there was no need to pull up the carpet and replace the underlay. Once the water was extracted, I sprayed 2 treatments, one was an antimicrobial treatment to prevent mold and bacteria and the other was an anti browning solution. When carpet becomes very wet, the backing often causes a brown discolouration of the carpet, which is common in carpet water damage situations and is, not surprisingly called “browning”! I also applied a deodouriser to ensure the carpet smelt fresh like oranges and not wet dog!

All’s well that ends well

I left a couple of blowers there to dry the carpet as quickly as possible and told Emily I would call to check on them tomorrow.  When I followed up with Emily the next day, the carpet was dry and she was very happy! No stains, no smell, just nice clean, dry carpet with no sign of carpet water damage.
