Top Tips for Upholstery Steam Cleaning Melbourne

If you are looking for tips on upholstery steam cleaning Melbourne, then this article is for you! If like me, you have saved your hard earned cash and invested in a beautiful lounge suite, then you will want to make sure you keep it looking its best for many years to come. Just think about it – where do you spend most of your waking hours at home? Usually on the couch, right? Your couch is one of the hardest working pieces of furniture in your home, so you need to look after it! It doesn’t matter if your furniture is fabric or leather, both need regular care and attention and the occasional help from a professional.

Our Top Tips for Upholstery Steam Cleaning Melbourne

Upholstery Steam Cleaning Melbourne Tip 1: Vacuum RegularlyUpholstery Steam Cleaning Melbourne vacuum regularly

When upholstery steam cleaning or just maintaining your couch, always start with a vacuum! Your couch can collect a lot of dust and dirt, which sits on top of the fibres making them look dull.  Dust and dirt particles can cause premature wear and tear of the fibre so try to vacuum regularly, especially if you have pets!  Pet hair can be difficult to remove by vacuuming alone, so you might want to invest in a pet hair removal glove or one of the many other rollers or gadgets sold in pet stores, for this purpose.

If you have kids, you also might need to vacuum more regularly, because if they are anything like mine, they will drop crumbs and food all over the couch and into every nook and cranny!  Leather couches also need the occasional vacuum, especially under the cushions and in the crevices.

A damp soft microfibre cloth is also handy for removing dust from leather furniture.  If you plan to clean your couch, then a pre vacuum is a vital first step.  Once you make the couch wet, the dirt and dust will add to the task if not removed beforehand.

Upholstery Steam Cleaning Melbourne Tip 2: Blot spills immediately! upholstery steam cleaning Melbourne

There you are enjoying a quite glass of wine after a long day and next thing you  know, the dog jumps up next to you and BAM!  There goes your nice glass of red, all over the couch! It is crucial to attend to the spill as soon as possible to prevent it soaking into the padding and permanently staining the fabric.

Blot the stain NEVER rub or scrub!  Rubbing the fabric with a cloth or scrubbing it with a brush can cause even more damage to the fibre.  Grab a soft dry cloth and gently blot at the stain until you have removed as much liquids as possible.

If you have your upholstery treated with a fabric protector, then the liquid from spills will “pool” on top of the fabric, giving you time to grab a cloth and gently blot up the liquid without leaving any permanent staining.  Fabric protection will buy you time but will not stop staining altogether, unless you act quickly.

Upholstery Steam Cleaning Melbourne: Tip 3: Check the labels Couch cleaning Melbourne label

Furniture manufacturers use different codes on the care labels of soft furnishings.  These codes indicate the best method of cleaning for the type of fabric or leather used. Always check the care label on your couch before applying any type of cleaning solution or liquid.  In Australia, there is a mandatory standard for the labeling of all clothing and textiles.  Information on the label must be in English and must provide information on how to care and clean the fabric as well as how to avoid damage.  This standard also applies to leather and suede. The codes most commonly used for furniture are;

  • “W” – item can be washed using water and water based detergents, however do not over wet the fabric. Can use professional upholstery steam cleaning Melbourne service to clean.
  • “S” – Dry solvent cleaning only – DO NOT  use water or water based detergents and do not use upholstery steam cleaning.
  • “WS” You can use either water based detergents or solvents to clean this fabric. Professional upholstery steam or dry cleaning can be used.
  • “X” – Professional cleaning or vacuuming only – do not use water or solvents as they may cause damage or discolouration.

Should your furniture no longer have care labels attached, then always proceed with caution.  If you are going to attempt spot cleaning the couch yourself, then I recommend trying the product on an inconspicuous part of the couch first to check for colour fastness, etc.  As always, if in any doubt, call a professional upholstery cleaner for advice.

Upholstery Steam Cleaning Melbourne Tip 4: Use appropriate cleaning method for the type fabric and stain

There is never a “one size fits all” cleaning agent when it comes to general cleaning or stain removal, of your soft furnishings.  You need to determine if the stain is food, drink, protein, grease, ink, or something else.  The type of cleaning agent you use will very much depend on the type of stain.  Our tips for carpet stain removal will explain more about treating different types of stains on fabric. These tips are only for furniture with W or WS labels, always seek professional advice for S and X labeled furniture.

Sometimes spot cleaning can leave water marks and in this case you will need to clean the whole couch to remove them.  I would recommend calling in a professional upholstery steam cleaner to fix water marks. You also need to be mindful of natural fibres such as wool and cotton, which need specialty cleaning agents designed specifically for natural fibres.

If your couch is leather or suede then you will need to use specialty leather cleaning and condition products to prevent damage to the leather finish.

Upholstery Steam Cleaning Melbourne Tip 5: Call in the pros at least once a year Professional Upholstery steam cleaning Melbourne

Vacuuming and spot cleaning are good for general maintenance of your furniture, however a professional clean at least once or twice a year will help stop wear and tear as well as keeping your couch clean and hygienic.  For leather couches this is especially important to stop fading and cracking of the leather.

You can hire a DIY carpet cleaning machine and clean your furniture yourself, however you do need to be careful not to over wet the couch and especially the padding.  Sometimes these machines are not powerful enough to remove a lot of the water used for cleaning.  This can result in water damaged furniture and even mould. For just a few dollars more than the cost of the machine hire and detergent, you can save yourself time and energy by using a professional upholstery steam cleaning Melbourne service.

Cleaning Upholstery and Carpet Melbourne

Cleaning upholstery and carpet at the local footy club!

When your local footy club is known as “The Bear Cave”, then you can probably guess the activity that goes on there! We have recently had the pleasure of cleaning upholstery and carpet at the Bear Cave (AKA The Caulfield Bears Junior Football Club) in Carnegie.  This club house is owned by the Glen Eira City Council and leased out to several different clubs throughout the year.  It is the home of not only the junior Bears, but also the seniors (AKA as the Mighty Caulfield Bears Football & Netball Club).  It is also the home of the Carnegie Cricket Club in the summer months.  Many enthusiastic kids, parents and local sporting heroes make great use of the space provided to them for the season.  Which means our services are very much in demand for cleaning upholstery and carpet, at the change over of the seasons!

Cleaning Carpet and kicking goals!cleaning upholstery with truck mounted system

Cleaning carpet is a dirty business (excuse the pun!) and so is footy.  There’s not just the muddy boots to contend with, but also the social nights!  The hot pies and cold beers, the presentations, the fundraisers, family nights…..Cricket season is just as bad (or good!)! For us this means commercial deep carpet cleaning is required.

Firstly we vacuum, then we pre spray the carpet and pre treat any spots and stains.  Next, we allow some dwell time for the pre spray to activate and work its magic. Sometimes we need to agitate the carpet with a buffing machine or a hand held carpet rake.  This ensures the pre spray is distributed through the carpet fibres and helps lift deep down stains.

The next step is hot water extraction, using our truck mounted system.  The truck mount is generated from the van and therefore does not require access to electricity.  It also heats water to the correct temperature and has stronger suction than a portable machine.  Making it the perfect tool for this heavy duty cleaning. Hot water extraction (steam cleaning) is the process whereby hot water is delivered at high pressure to the carpet via a cleaning wand and then extracted, along with the dirt and pre spray.  The combination of the heat and the strong suction means carpets are thoroughly “washed” and drying times are reduced. This is because, the heat enables rapid evaporation and the strong suction removes maximum moisture.

Finally once the carpet is clean, we apply a natural deodouriser to ward off any residual muddy odours!!

Cleaning Upholstery is a win, win!

Cleaning upholstery was next on the footy clubs “to do list”. Recently the Caulfield Bears Football & Netball Club received a donation of some well used upholstered chairs – the first win! These chairs are a great addition to the club as they will provide more seats for fundraising nights, club functions and presentation nights.  There was just one problem.  The chairs were very dirty from many years of use by another organisation and from being in storage.  They needed help cleaning upholstery chairs and fast! This is where we came in and hit a six for the ultimate win!

Using a similar method for cleaning upholstery chairs, as we did for the carpet, we were able to restore the chairs to their former glory – well almost! I think you will agree that they look a whole lot better once we finished with them!

Cleaning upholstery chairs

Cleaning upholstery regularly will not only keep your furniture looking clean and fresh, but it also prolongs the life of the fabric and helps reduce wear and tear. As well as chairs, we also clean couches, lounges, sofas and ottomans.

We offer professional and affordable methods for cleaning upholstery and carpets. If your sports club or community organisation could do with some help in terms of cleaning upholstery or carpets, please ask us about our community discounts.

Carpet Cleaning Prices

How much do you charge?

Melbourne carpet cleaning prices can vary considerably from business to business. “How much do you charge?” is the question we get asked most often by our customers and one that does not have a standard answer.  Some carpet cleaning companies in Melbourne will advertise cleaning packages, such as standard, deluxe and premium cleaning – all with different price points and inclusions. Others list every service they offer with individual prices for each.  We do not advertise pricing on our website. You are probably asking why, we don’t have cleaning packages, or why we don’t advertise our prices…..well let me explain.

No two Melbourne carpet cleaning jobs are the same.  We like to assess each unique job and price it according to the individual size and condition of the carpet.  We have a base rate we charge per room, (currently $35 per standard room which is up to 12sqm.)

What do you get for our base rate?

  • More than 10 years experience in the cleaning industry and all the knowledge that has been accumulated over these years
  • Training and Certification by the leading Worldwide Industry bodies: Jena Dyco and IICRC
  • Well maintained equipment and first class environmentally friendly cleaning products
  • Public Liability Insurance
  • Satisfaction guarantee and after sales service
  • Friendly and reliable service technicians in uniform
  • Pre inspection
  • Spot treatment
  • Hot water extraction (Steam Cleaning) with either a portable machine or a truck mounted system (depending on access to the property).
  • Deodourising & sanitising
  • Post cleaning Inspection – we don’t leave until you are completely satisfied with the work.

Other factors we take into consideration when quoting;

  • the type of carpet fibre
  • the amount of soiling or staining
  • property access (high rise apartment, 3 level town house, single level house, etc.)
  • distance traveled
  • how long it has been since the carpet was last cleaned

carpet cleaning prices MelbourneCarpet cleaning quotes over the phone

Therefore when you call us, we will ask you a series of questions to determine carpet cleaning prices for YOUR home or office.  We can usually give you an estimate over the phone.  By asking these questions, we can be fairly confident that our quote will be accurate and all inclusive.  That way, there are no “hidden extras” or “surprises” when we come to do the work. Unlike some Melbourne carpet cleaning businesses, we try to be transparent with our carpet cleaning prices, and include everything upfront, rather than quote low and then add on extra charges when we come to do the work.  Of course, sometimes unforeseen situations arise resulting in the need for small additional charges, but we will always explain these to you before proceeding with the work.

Black Gold Carpet Cleaning Melbourne, does not offer cleaning bundles or packages because we always strive to achieve premium cleaning results.  In our view,  “Standard, Deluxe, Premium packages” implies  “almost clean, sort of clean and very clean” .  There is no “one size fits all” when it comes to carpet cleaning! We use all the knowledge, equipment and cleaning products required to give each and every job the best result possible for the type and condition of the carpet.

Carpet cleaning prices MelbourneFlexible Pricing

Many times we have been to a job and the customer has said, “don’t worry about that stain…it was here when I moved in…I only want a standard clean”.  Then we go ahead and we remove the stain anyway and leave the carpet looking the best it can be.  That IS OUR “standard” clean!  This is why we charge based on the job requirements rather than a one size fits all type pricing structure.  Our flexible pricing system also allows us to offer discounts for pensioners, local neighbourhood customers and those who want to clean their upholstery as well as their carpet. We value our repeat customers and will always try to offer them great value for money and a little something extra to thank them for their loyalty.

carpet cleaning prices Upholstery cleaning prices

When it comes to upholstery cleaning, many people ask why it is more expensive than carpet cleaning.  Upholstery cleaning prices are based on the number of seats to be cleaned.  The upholstery tool we use for cleaning couches and sofas is much smaller than the wand we use for cleaning carpets, therefore it is much more time consuming.  The extra time it takes to clean upholstery is factored into the pricing. The other factor we take into consideration when quoting, is the cost of the experience, knowledge and training of our staff.  To be able to provide you with premium cleaning results, we need to be constantly updating our skill set and learning about the latest techniques and equipment.

The importance of questions!

So next time you wonder why there is such a difference in the prices between Melbourne carpet cleaning businesses, ask a few questions about inclusions, experience, training, guarantees and make sure you choose a carpet cleaner who can confidently answer your questions and someone who asks you a few questions too!

DIY carpet cleaning
DIY Carpet Cleaning what are the real costs?

Is there a difference between cost and price when it comes to DIY Carpet Cleaning in Melbourne?

Have you ever browsed through parenting forums? If you have, you probably would of come across threads like this about DIY carpet cleaning:

DIY Carpet Cleaning forum“Hello, I was thinking bout getting one of those DIY carpet cleaning things from Coles or Woolies…Do they work?” HEYMAMA

OR

DIY Carpet Cleaning Melbourne forum“Hi, my carpets are in desperate need of cleaning. Instead of paying hundreds for someone to do it I was thinking of hiring one of those machines from Woolies or Bunnings and doing it myself. Has anyone hired one of these before and do they clean well? Is it worth the effort or would you just pay someone to do it? TIA”

It is quite a common question, especially for cash strapped Melbourne parents.  Let’s face it kids can be expensive, not only do you have to purchase all kinds of paraphernalia just to get them around, keep them safe, feed and entertain them, then there are all the activities, child care, education costs, it is never ending!  Usually things like small home maintenance jobs and replacing that tired old sofa are put on hold as the kids make short work of any extra cash.  Which is an odd thing, as kids also are the ones who usually spend the most time on the sofa, the rug and the carpet and they are usually responsible for most of the mess and spills!!

I can completely relate to this as I have three kids of my own.  I understand why people would look at just the price when deciding what type of carpet cleaning they should use, but I hope to show you why you shouldn’t base these types of decisions on price alone. Carpet and upholstery are major big ticket items in your home.  They are expensive to replace, so it is worth remembering this when contemplating DIY carpet cleaning as opposed to hiring a professional. This is especially relevant if you are renting! So what are the costs?

DIY Carpet Cleaning* Prices in Melbourne

  • Machine Hire $40 for 24 hours
  • Detergent      $12 for 1 Lt
  • Spotter          $9 for 500ml
  • De Foamer   $ 8 for 500ml

      Total Cost      $69

*Prices based on current rates for hiring machines from Coles, Woolworths, Bunnings, Foodworks or IGA in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia.  Use of manufacturers chemicals is mandatory when hiring machines.

These are just the basic costs of hiring the equipment and chemicals, you also need to consider the other costs;DIY carpet cleaning Melbourne damage

  • The time factor, as you will need to add in time and travel costs to and from the place of hire.
  • The biggest cost (priceless really!!) time taken out of your day to actually do the cleaning.  These supermarket machines are very small and need to be constantly filled, emptied and refilled as you clean.  This process can take 2-4 hours depending on the size of the job.
  • Drying time up to 24 hours.  These smaller machines are not particularly powerful and do not remove as much water from the carpet and upholstery as the professional machines do.
  • Professional restoration or replacement of carpet/soft furnishings. WHAT?! Yes that’s right, you need to factor this possibility in. It can, and often does go horribly wrong and the hire companies are not liable for damaged caused.  The machines usually come with good instructions, however there is a real possibility, that through inexperience, you could over wet your carpet or couch. Should this happen, they can be permanently and sometime irretrievably damaged. You may be able to call in a professional carpet or restoration specialist to fix the damage at an additional cost, but you may also end up having to replace the lot.  Of course this is worst case scenario, but it does happen.
  • If you are renting, some landlords insist on the carpets being cleaned by professional carpet cleaners and will ask to see a receipt.  They do not approve of DIY carpet cleaning, so you may need to still pay a professional to re clean the carpet.
  • If your carpet is new and covered under a manufacturer’s warranty, DIY carpet cleaning may void any warranty claims.  Usually there are very specific warranty conditions for carpet, so make sure you read the fine print.

Budget Carpet Cleaning carpet cleaning in Melbourne

Ok, so the DIY machine is cost effective, but we have all seen the amazing deals offered by some carpet cleaning companies on coupons, deal sites and the like.  Often you can find carpet cleaning companies offering prices as low as $50 for 3 rooms! So why would you go to all the trouble and effort of DIY when you can hire these guys for even less? It is a no brainer really – or is it?

There is the old adage, you get what you pay for and in this case it is very true.  Often budget priced means low quality equipment, little or no experience or training, no guarantees and the very real possibility of damage to your property.  Tempting as it may seem, I would not recommend going down this path either, as you may well find your self calling a professional carpet cleaner like Black Gold to fix the damage caused by budget priced carpet cleaners.  We have been called to countless jobs to fix mistakes left behind by inexperienced cleaners. If you can’t even clean your own carpets for $50, how do you expect a “professional” carpet cleaner to do so?

You also need to be careful of “bait and switch” tactics employed by some of these budget priced firms.  Sometimes they quote very low over the phone and then inflate the price once they are there, by adding on extras or claiming the rooms are bigger, or the carpet is dirtier than standard.

“… I have used other companies who are extremely cunning and deceiving in pricing. Having used a large company in the past like Cheap as Chips, I was quoted $66 initially and for reasons and logic that only the cleaner could justify and understand, my bill ended up to be $200…..and then $220 because GST wasn’t initially included…..”

Evan, South Melbourne

Professional Carpet Cleaning

DIY Carpet cleaning MelbourneCarpet cleaning by professionals like Black Gold Carpet Cleaning is not as ridiculously expensive, as some would have you believe. We charge by the room for residential and by the square meter for commercial properties. A standard room is usually priced from around $30 for residential.

We do not publish a price list, because we like to price each job according to it’s unique set of circumstances. Factors which can affect pricing include, distance traveled to the job, the size, the type and condition of the carpet, previous cleaning undertaken, stains, amount of foot traffic and so on. We do not have a one size fits all pricing schedule, because we know, through experience, that each job is different.  We ask questions before we quote to make sure we give an accurate price, however once we quote the price is fixed.  We do not charge extra unless you ask us to clean extra areas or unless the size or condition of the carpet is vastly different to what was discussed. Having said that, what does a professional carpet cleaner cost compared to DIY carpet cleaning?

Average 2 bedroom house from $120

That is only slightly more than DIY carpet cleaning.  What do you get for the extra $40?

  • Carpet professionally cleaned with the well maintained and safety checked equipment by qualified technicians who are fully insured.
  • Pre inspection of carpet to determine the best cleaning method
  • High quality detergents and chemicals which are suitable for your particular carpet fibre and condition of the carpet.
  • Spot treatments for those everyday traffic marks and spills
  • Satisfaction guarantee and after sales service.
  • A professional invoice/receipt for your records should it be required for real estate agents or warranty claims
  • Carpet that dries within 2-4 hours
So next time you are considering carpet cleaning, weigh up the real costs and not just the price.
