All jobs are “BIG” jobs for Black Gold Carpet Cleaning

Carpet cleaning MelbourneFrom little things big things grow….

Do you treat small jobs like big jobs? At Black Gold Carpet Cleaning Melbourne, we strive to maintain consistently exceptional customer service, no matter the size of the job. One thing I have learned from life experience, is to apply the same enthusiasm and passion to each and every job, no matter how big or small, no matter how profitable, all leads are good leads and all carpet cleaning customers have potential for repeat business.

Carpet cleaning can be unpredictable….

A few days ago, I had a free morning and was looking forward to a bit of a sleep in and a lazy start to the day. You know that delicious feeling of not having to be anywhere in particular after a frantic week of work? Just as I was pouring my morning coffee, I received a call from a distressed carpet cleaning customer in Brighton. She had spilled a couple of drops of ink on her valuable cream coloured wool rug and wanted to know if I could come right away. This was a new customer who had found me via an internet search for “Melbourne Carpet cleaning” so while I was a little disappointed to be called out, I was glad to know my marketing was starting to work.

I admit, at first, I was tempted to pass on the job as it was a lot of effort for very little return and I was really looking forward to my coffee and catching up on the news. However the Brighton customer was quite panicked and kept asking me what she could do to remove the stain herself. Knowing how difficult it is to remove ink, I advised her not to touch it and I would be there shortly. Ink is one of those stains that can be made much worse if you don’t have the right knowledge and equipment. You should always call a professional carpet cleaner to remove ink stains.

On with the job……

Reluctantly I climbed into my van and headed out to the customer’s Brighton address. As predicted it was a very small job and I managed to remove the stain in about five minutes. It took me longer to set up and pack up than to remove the actual stain. The customer was so happy with the result, it was worth missing my coffee just to see her reaction. Carpet CleaningThis also reinforced for me that in Melbourne, carpet cleaning is very competitive, so I am grateful for all work that comes my way.

Small steps to big rewards……

The biggest surprise for me was still to come. Once I had removed the stain, the customer asked me to quote on cleaning her seven seater fabric lounge suite, five seater leather couch, three rugs, seven rooms of carpet and a staircase! I provided her with my quote and she accepted on the spot and booked me in for next week.

You never know where a job will lead and the referrals it can provide. It is important to  give consistent, quality service and results every time, no matter who the customer or how small or large the job. This Melbourne carpet cleaning job started out as a minimum charge call out and ended up landing me one of the biggest residential jobs I have booked so far this year.

At Black Gold Carpet Cleaning Melbourne, we love our job and you will too.

How to remove red wine on carpet

Oh no! Not on the carpet!Red wine on carpet

You will be familiar with that phrase if you have ever spilt something, especially red wine on carpet. It is a question we get asked quite often. Read on to find out how we showed Nicole from Canterbury how to remove red wine on carpet.

Unfortunately for her, Nicole is all too familiar with the above scenario.  Yesterday when I went to steam clean her carpets, she showed me a red wine stain, that had happened about a year ago.  She had come home from a hard day at the office and sat down at the computer after dinner with a nice glass of Merlot in hand.  Next thing you know, she got a little too exuberant with the mouse and knocked the half full glass of red wine off the desk. Red wine on carpet – Disaster! Or so she thought! Sound familiar?

Luckily for me, Nicole hadn’t tried to remove the stain with any chemicals, she had just blotted it with water and a cloth.  If she had used an over the counter product, then I might of had a bit more of a fight on my hands to remove the stain.  The fact that her carpets are synthetic rather than made from wool, also helped.  Woolen carpets tend to absorb liquid into the fibre and are less stain resistant then man made carpet fibres like polypropylene or nylon.

Nicole was sure I wouldn’t have much success removing the stain as it had been there for quite sometime.  I told her to stand back and watch a magician at work.  I treated the red wine stain with “magic potion” I concocted for such stains, then cleaned the carpet with my magic wand.  Before you could say abracadabra, the stain was all but gone! You would be amazed, just like Nicole!

“Yasser manged to remove a red wine stain on our carpet that was 12 months old. FANTASTIC! Would use Black Gold Carpet Cleaning again and I have recommended them to my friends.” Nicole, Canterbury, Vic, July 2013

It is important to remember that although I can make most stains disappear as if by magic, successful stain removal depends on many factors including;

  1. The age of the stain – most fresh stains can be removed by using the appropriate chemical or stain remover.  Unfortunately however, it is more often the case that the stain is left untreated for an extended periods before a carpet technician is called to resolve the problem.  This gives the liquid time to be absorbed into the carpet fibre and it sets on the fibre. Whatever you do, do not leave a stain unattended for long periods of time.
  2. The type of fibre and the construction of the carpet – natural fibres tend to absorb more liquid than synthetic fibres and are more prone to pile damage when cleaned too vigourously.
  3. The type of stain – It is very important to identify the type of stain in order to determine the best treatment. Trained technicians should be able to identify a variety of stains by sight, touch and smell if the stains are of unknown origins.
  4. Other removal attempts – Stain removal is a chemical process and all stains have different Ph levels.  A professional carpet cleaner will know the correct stain remover for each Ph level and situation.  Remember, whatever you put on the stain will alter the Ph level. Sometimes this makes stain removal almost impossible to remove, as the cleaner will have to estimate the altered Ph level and adjust his removal process accordingly.

Just remember, it is important to act quickly, you can blot up the excess liquid and dab with a clean damp cloth but do not rub. Please call Black Gold Carpet Cleaning soon as possible if the stain remains.  Our technicians will be able to discuss and identify the stain with you and give you a fairly good idea of the expected outcome.  If we believe we can remove the stain, however fail to do so, we do not charge extra for the stain removal.

Death by Coupon! Prices for Carpet Cleaning in Melbourne smashed!

Are coupon and deal sites destroying the service industry, and in particular my service industry – carpet cleaning in Melbourne?

carpet cleaning in Melbourne deals Cheap carpet cleaning in Melbourne is easy to find, but at what cost? I was in the office the other day and happened to answer a call from a customer.  She was asking for a quote to clean the carpet in her large four bedroom house and 5 seater couch.  I did a quick calculation and then discounted it by 25% (it’s winter – our quiet time, so I need to be competitive in my pricing).  When I gave her the discounted price, she screamed – and I don’t mean screamed in a good way!!  She was horrified by my very generously discounted quote and told me it was way too much and she was going to look up her favourite daily deal provider for a better price!

This got me thinking, has the coupon industry ruined our customers’ price perception forever?  Carpet Cleaning in Melbourne is uber competitive and it is really difficult to stand out from the crowd.  We try to by offering fantastic service and results every time and highlighting our uniqueness.  I discussed this in my last blog “carpet steam cleaning in Melbourne – why use us?”.  Price is often a crucial deciding factor for our customers, that is why we try to keep the price as low as possible without selling ourselves short. But how can we compete with “4 rooms of carpet cleaning for $50” and do we really want to?

Confessions of a carpet cleaner…

Before I get into this, I have a confession to make.  When I started this business a few years ago, I signed up to several coupon sites and I sold 4 rooms of carpet cleaning in Melbourne for $50!! At the time it seemed like a great way to get exposure, build our list, get people to our website, to try our service at a super low price and then book us again next time at the true price.  Sadly, we found we were flat out servicing coupon customers and had no time for regular customers and these coupon customers were not keen to return to us without the same discount.  They all raved about our service and sure some did call us up again next time they needed carpet cleaning, but they wanted the same discount again!!  When we couldn’t offer this price a second time, they went back to the deal sites to find another carpet cleaner offering another unbelievable deal.

Carpet cleaning in Melbourne is something many cleaning companies offer, but very few of them are actually carpet cleaners.  It takes time, experience, training the right equipment and knowing how to use it, to clean carpet properly.  This all comes at a cost to the business and contributes to the pricing. When we did coupon deals, of the $50 charged, we only received $30 and the coupon company got the other $20. That $30 barely paid for our petrol let alone our cleaning supplies! We looked at it as a short term marketing campaign rather than a money making exercise.

carpet cleaning in MelbourneYou really do have to question what sort of result you will be getting from someone charging these types of prices.  Your carpets and lounge suites cost a lot of money, why risk using someone based on their pricing alone?  Would you take your designer dress or Italian Suit and throw it into the washing machine with your socks, just to save money on cleaning?  No, of course not!  You would take them to a professional dry cleaner.  Just imagine how your outfit would look after a good spin in the washing machine!  Do you really want your carpet to end up water logged, shrunken, stretched, damaged, or have the dye run? These are some of the things that can happen if you choose a carpet cleaner on price alone.  Why would you trust your valuable soft furnishings to anyone other than a professional?

I am not for a minute saying coupon carpet cleaners are all cowboys, I just want customers to be aware that price isn’t everything.  I am sure a lot of these coupon deals are from businesses just like ours, trying to make ends meet in tough times, generate a quick cash flow and build a list.

Before you hire a anyone for carpet cleaning in Melbourne, coupon or otherwise;

  • read the fine print
  • have a look at their website
  • ask about a guarantee
  • check out their accreditations
  • read reviews of the business on other sites (Google +, True Local, Service Seeking, etc.)

Carpet Steam Cleaning service Melbourne, Vic, surprise Google search results.

Carpet steam cleaning service Melbourne

Have you ever “Googled” yourself? We did, and were very pleasantly surprised. In amongst the usually deals and ratings sites for carpet steam cleaning service Melbourne, we came across the published blog of one of our customers, Sammie (thanks for the smiles @ blogspot).

This was something we stumbled across by accident but were delighted to read. At the end of the day, it really is about exceeding customer expectations and coming home feeling appreciated. We are very proud of not only our carpet cleaning, but also our customer service –  we really enjoy getting to know our customers.

We cleaned her carpet late last year and as you can see for yourself, she was very happy with the result;

“Today I got the carpets steam cleaned – woo hoo! I was insanely excited about it and Black Gold Carpet Cleaning’s owner, Yasser, actually came to do the job himself. There were 3 hilarious moments:

1. Yasser was amused by how excited and amazed I was with watching black spots disappear off the carpet, and thought I’d be impressed when he showed me how filthy black the water was when he emptied it out from the steam cleaning machine (and I was very impressed). He then asked, “When’s the last time you steam cleaned your carpet?” and when I responded with “Never”, his jaw dropped to the floor. His expression was priceless.

2. He then asked, “How long have you been living here for?” to which I answered, “Errrr we’ve lived here for 15 years” and he went ballistic! “WHAT 15 years and the carpet has never been steam cleaned?!?!?!”

3. After Yasser finished up, I thanked him for doing a great job and as I extended my hand to offer a standard handshake (we shook hands when we met), he gave me a bro handshake instead!!! LOL I was in hysterics after! I don’t know how but I had elevated myself to bro-ness! It’s such an delightful feeling to know that the carpet is fresh and clean! Once it had dried, I couldn’t help rolling around on it with Snowflake.
